APPEAL TO THE WORLD ACADEMIC COMMUNITY.
The Alumni Association of the Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki adds its voice to the global condemnation of the Turkish President’s decision to convert Aghia Sofia into a mosque. Besides being a religious relic of Christianity, Aghia Sophia is also the symbol of the symbiosis between East and West. Leaving aside the intentions for such a decision, the conversion into a mosque undermines this symbiosis at a time when mankind most needs it. It also constitutes a provocation towards cultural humanity which posits that monuments supersede their epoch and become reference points independent of religious, national or cultural characteristics. In that respect, Aghia Sophia is a part of that cultural humanity.
The Alumni Association of the Aristoteles University of Thessaloniki calls on the Turkish, as well as the global, academic community to participate in supporting the review of the Turkish President’s decision. The ties of the cities of Thessaloniki and Constantinople have been strong during the Byzantine Empire. It is to the benefit of both people that they continue to develop nowadays. The decision to convert Aghia Sophia to a mosque does not support such an initiative. We hope that logic will prevail. We also hope that the sensitivity for maintaining peace in the region will be boosted by the spirit of coexistence. The symbolism of Aghia Sophia, in that respect, is catalytic.

L’association des anciens étudiants de l’université Aristotle de Thessalonique s’associe à la condamnation universelle de la décision du président Turc de convertir Aghia Sophia en mosquée. Aghia Sophia est un fondement de la religion chrétienne, et aussi un symbole de la symbiose entre Est et Ouest. Laissant de côté les intentions de cette décision Turque, la conversion en mosquée ébranle cette symbiose à un moment ou l’humanité en a grandement besoin. Cet acte constitue aussi une provocation envers l’humanité culturelle qui postule que les monuments sont au delà de leur époque et deviennent des points de référence indépendamment de caractéristiques religieux, nationaux ou culturels. Aghia Sophia fait partie de ce patrimoine culturel mondial.
L’association des anciens étudiants de l’université Aristotle de Thessalonique fait appel à la communauté académique Turque, mais aussi mondiale, pour supporter une action visant à revoir la décision du président Turc. Les liens entre Thessalonique et Constantinople ont toujours été étroits durant l’empire Byzantin. C’est pour le bénéfice des deux peuples qu’ils continuent à être tissés de nos jours. La décision de convertir Aghia Sophia en mosquée infléchit cette initiative. Nous espérons que la logique prévaudra et que le maintien de la paix dans la région sera renforcé par l’esprit de cohabitation/coexistence. Le symbolisme d’Aghia Sophia à cet aspect est donc essentiel.

تضم جمعية خريجي جامعة اريستوتيليس في ثيثالونيكي صوتها إلى ردود الأفعال العالمية ضد قرار الرئيس التركي بتحويل أيا صوفيا إلى مسجد. إن أيا صوفيا ليست مجرد آثر مسيحي بل إنها رمز يمثل التعايش بين الشرق والغرب.
بغض النظر عن نية تحويل أيا صوفيا إلى مسجد فإن هذا الإجراء يقوض التعايش في الوقت الذي تكون الإنسانية بأمس الحاجة إليه. إنه في الوقت نفسه تحد للمجتمع المتحضر الذي يريد من الآثار القديمة أن تتحول إلى نقطة التقاء للجميع بغض النظر عن الدين أو العرق أو الخلفية الثقافية. إن أيا صوفيا هي ملك للبشرية المتحضرة ووجودها يكرم تركيا أيضاً.
تناشد جمعية خريجي جامعة اريستوتيليس في ثيسالونيكي المجتمع الأكاديمي التركي والدولي في المساهمة في عدول قرار الرئيس التركي.
كانت العلاقات وثيقة بين ثيسالونيكي والقسطنطينيتة خلال الإمبراطورية البيزنطية، وإنه من مصلحة الشعبين أن تستمر اليوم أيضاً. إن قرار تحويل أيا صوفيا إلى مسجد لا يساهم في هذا التقارب,
نأمل أن يسود المنطق والحساسية من أجل الحفاظ على السلام في المنطقة، التي يجب أن يسودها روح التعايش لما يمثله رمز أيا صوفيا الكبير.

SELANİK ARISTOTELION ÜNİVERSİTESİ MEZUNLAR BİRLİĞİ DERNEĞİ
Selanik Aristotelion Üniversitesi Mezunları Derneği, Türkiye Cumhurbaşkanı’nın Ayasofya’yı camiye dönüştürme kararına karşı verdiği küresel tepkiyi dile getiriyor.
Ayasofya sadece bir Hıristiyanlık anıtı değil, aynı zamanda Doğu ve Batı’nın bir arada yaşandığını gösteren bir semboldür.
Niyetlere ek olarak, Ayasofya’nın bir camiye dönüşmesi, insanlığın buna ihtiyaç duyduğu bir zamanda bu birlikte yaşamaya zarar verir.
Aynı zamanda, zamanının ötesine geçen anıtların din, etnik köken veya kültürel özelliklerinden bağımsız olarak herkes için sembol olmasını isteyen medeni insanlık için de bir meydan okumadır. Ayasofya medeni insanlığın semboludur. Bu da Türkiye’yi onur verici bir sey dir.
Selanik Aristotelion Üniversitesi Mezunlar Derneği, Türk ve uluslararası akademik topluluğa, Türk Cumhurbaşkanı kararının değistirmesine katkıda bulunmaya çağırır.
Selanik’in Konstantinopolis ile bağları Bizans İmparatorluğu sırasında çok guçlu idi.
Bu bağları bugün muhafaza etmek ve iki tarihi sehrin ilişkilerini geliştirmek, her iki halkın da yararınadır. Ayasofya’yı camiye dönüştürme kararı bu yakınlaşmaya yardımcı olmaz.
Durumu bir arada yaşam ruhu olan bölgede barışın korunması için mantık ve duyarlılığın geçerli olacağını umuyoruz. Dolayısıyla Ayasofya’nın sembolizmi katalitiktir.
